The Historic Meeting (1922)

In 1922, Abhay Charan met Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur for the first time in Calcutta through a friend, Narendranath Mullick. The meeting took place on the rooftop of a building where the great Vaishnava teacher was staying. Although Abhay was young and not yet searching for a guru, the powerful personality and spiritual conviction of Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati immediately made a deep impression on him.

During their conversation, Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati recognized Abhay’s education and sincerity. This unexpected meeting became a turning point in Abhay’s life, planting the seed of a mission that would later transform spiritual history.

In that very first meeting, Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur gave Abhay a remarkable instruction. He said that educated young Indians like him should spread the message of Lord Chaitanya in the English language to the Western world. Abhay was surprised by this request, especially since India was still under British rule.

When Abhay suggested that India should first gain political independence, Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati replied that spiritual knowledge was far more urgent than political change. He explained that the message of Krishna consciousness was universal and should be shared with people everywhere. These words deeply impressed Abhay and stayed in his heart for the rest of his life.

Over the following years, Abhay increasingly associated with the Gaudiya Math, the spiritual movement founded by Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur. He studied the teachings of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and helped the mission in different ways, including writing articles and supporting its activities.

In 1933, in Allahabad, Abhay formally received initiation from Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur, accepting him as his spiritual master. From that moment, he became fully committed to serving his guru’s instruction—to spread the teachings of Krishna consciousness throughout the world.
